SPORTING groups from Berri, Monash, Gerard, Glossop and Winkie are being encouraged to take part in an exhibition in the Berri Town Hall next month as part of the SA History Festival.
The event from Friday May 19 until Sunday May 21 is being coordinated by the Berri Barmera Library Service, Berri Barmera Council and Our Town BERRI.
The exhibition will feature photos, scrap books, past uniforms, sports equipment and a film depicting the history of sport in the five towns.
Berri Barmera Library Manager Peter Ison said the exhibition will celebrate the significant role sport has played in the community over the years.
Sports no longer played in the district will also be featured.
Representatives from sports clubs interested in taking part in the SA History Festival display have been meeting since December 2022 to plan the event.
These include Berri’s football, rowing, tennis, softball, hockey, swimming, netball, bowling and basketball clubs.
“We are keen to have as many sporting groups as possible featured,” Mr Ison said.
“A club’s display can be as big or as small as they want it to be.”
Our Town BERRI will be producing a documentary based on the event and is keen to capture stories about past and present sporting clubs and their members.
The Berri Netball Association has also received a Council of the Ageing grant to develop a 20-minute documentary focusing on its members and their early memories of the sport.
Life members of all sporting clubs involved are invited to visit the exhibition on Saturday 20th May at 11am and enjoy the free morning tea.
The event will also feature a fashion parade of different uniforms worn by Berri sports clubs over the years.
Past and present sporting organisations are encouraged to lodge their records into the Berri Library Local History Collection for preservation and safe keeping.
“We have a secure room to keep these materials safe,” Mr Ison said.
“Clubs may wish to store their original minutes, memorabilia and photos in this area,” he said.
Staff at the Berri Library will be able to help sporting groups transfer their 8mm film, VHS video, photos and slides into a digital format.
“We are always keen to add to our collection of digital images and develop this resource for the community,” he said.
Interested sporting organisations can find out more about becoming involved in next month’s exhibition by contacting Mr Ison on 08 85 952 666 or at pison@bbc.sa.gov.au .
